ABOUT THE FMR BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED Fine Music Radio seeks applicants for the 2024 FMR Bursary Trust Awards.

The bursary supports studies toward a performance Diploma or Degree in Music.

MORE ABOUT THE FMR BURSARY COMPETITION – RULES & REGULATIONS The FMR Bursary Trust Awards involve several rounds:

  • The initial round (application) requires a pre-recorded audition video. The final round takes place in the Baxter Concert Hall in July 2024, featuring four categories: Classical Voice, Classical Instrumental, Jazz Vocal/Instrumental, and African Music.
  • Preliminary round performances consist of pre-recorded unlisted YouTube videos, submitted with the application. Up to three applicants per category will advance to the final round.
  • Final rounds occur in the Baxter Concert Hall in July 2024 (Classical on July 23 and Jazz/African on July 26), also broadcasted by Fine Music Radio. Competitors receive a broadcast copy for personal use. Finalists must provide details, including names and instruments of ensembles/accompanists, by July 10, 2024.
  • Applicants agree that the FMR Bursary Trust may record and use competition performances at their discretion.
  • Adjudication involves panel decisions, with final decisions being non-appealable. Feedback is provided after the final round. Preliminary and final rounds are assessed separately.
  • Applicants are judged on presentation, program balance, and, for Jazz and African categories, instrumentation, arrangement, and ensemble leadership.
  • Repertoire includes a 15-minute program with contrasting styles. Classical Vocal requires at least one opera aria and one art-song. African Music must showcase proficiency in at least two instruments, one of which may be voice. Repertoire changes are allowed before July 10, 2024. Backline ensembles should not exceed four members.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE FMR BURSARY Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • South African citizenship
  • Residency in South Africa
  • Pursuing a Diploma or Degree in Music
  • Enrolled at a South African tertiary institution
